Audiences

Create a named, reusable audience from a saved segment, and understand the difference between its count and a campaign's recipient list.

An audience is a named, reusable set of recipients for campaigns. Every campaign sends to an audience. You build an audience from a saved segment of contacts.

Go to Campaigns › Audiences. The list shows each audience's name, Source, Matching contacts and an Updated column with a button to count it.

Create an audience

  1. If you don't have one yet, create a segment in Contacts › Segments (for example "Opted-in customers in Pune").
  2. Go to Campaigns › Audiences.
  3. Click New audience.
  4. Enter a Name that says what the audience is.
  5. Choose the Segment.
  6. Click Create audience.

The audience points at the segment; it never copies the filter. If you change the segment, the audience changes with it.

Note: Creating audiences is limited to Owners, Admins and Marketing Managers.

The Source column can also show Chosen contacts or Import for audiences created another way (for example through the API). New audiences on this screen are always built from a segment.

Count an audience

Counting is done when you ask, not as you type. Click Count matching contacts on the audience's row, or in the campaign composer. The count shows when it was taken.

  • Not measured yet means the audience has never been counted. It does not mean it is empty.
  • at least before the number means counting stopped at the limit, so the real number is higher.

The count is not the recipient list

An audience's count is a live estimate of who matches right now. A campaign does not send to the estimate. When you resolve a campaign's audience, IconEngage builds a fixed list of recipients once, and that list is what the campaign sends to.

Resolving:

  • leaves out contacts who have opted out or blocked your business;
  • leaves out contacts missing a value that one of the template's blanks needs (they get a row marked Not sent, so you can find and fix them);
  • removes anyone who would be reached twice;
  • fixes the list, so contacts added or changed afterwards are not in it.

After resolving, the campaign page shows the recipient count beside the estimate, with Why these numbers differ explaining the gap.

To pick up changes made since, click Resolve again. This builds a new list and replaces the old one.

Audience size limit

A single campaign sends to at most 10,000 recipients. If an audience matches more than that, the count shows at least 10,000 and only the first 10,000 matching contacts are included when the campaign is resolved. To reach more people, split the segment (for example by tag or region) and send more than one campaign.
