Segments

Save a filter of contacts as a segment, and learn which conditions the segment builder offers.

A segment is a saved filter, not a saved list. Every time a segment is read, it is checked again, so a contact joins or leaves it the moment they start or stop matching. Segments are used to filter the contact list, to export contacts, and as the source of campaign audiences.

Go to Contacts › Segments to see your segments, with each one's name, definition and when it was last updated.

Note: Everyone who can see contacts can see segments. Creating, editing and deleting segments needs permission to edit contacts (Owners, Admins, Supervisors, Agents and Marketing Managers).

Create a segment

  1. Go to Contacts › Segments.
  2. Click New segment.
  3. Enter a Name and, optionally, a Description.
  4. Under Filter, choose Match all or Match any of the following.
  5. Click Add condition, then choose a field, an operator and a value.
  6. Repeat for each condition you need. Use the remove button beside a condition to take it out.
  7. Click Save segment.
  8. Check Matching contacts beside the filter to see how many contacts match.

A segment with no conditions matches every contact.

A segment can hold up to 32 conditions.

The matching count

Matching contacts counts up to 10,000. Above that it shows "10,000+". The segment itself has no limit, but a single campaign sends to at most 10,000 recipients. See Audiences.

The count is shown for a saved filter. If you have unsaved changes, you see This filter has changes that are not saved.

Use a segment

  • View the contacts: opens the contact list filtered to this segment.
  • Export: pick the segment in the contact list's Segment filter, then click Export. See Export contacts.
  • Campaigns: create an audience from the segment in Campaigns › Audiences.

Edit or delete a segment

Open the segment's row actions and choose Edit or Delete. Deleting a segment removes only the saved filter. The contacts are untouched. A segment that campaigns still use cannot be deleted until you remove it from them.

Segments with grouped conditions

Segments created through the API can contain nested groups of conditions. The builder shows them in full but edits only one flat group at a time. To edit such a segment here, click Start a new filter.
