Create a broadcast

Compose a campaign: pick an audience and an approved template, fill in its blanks, preview a real recipient's message and send a test.

The campaign composer collects everything a broadcast needs on one page. Saving it creates a draft. Nothing is sent until you send it.

Note: Creating campaigns is limited to Owners, Admins and Marketing Managers.

Before you start

  • You need an audience built from a saved segment. See Audiences.
  • You need a template that Meta has approved for your WhatsApp account. See Message templates.

Compose the campaign

  1. Go to Campaigns › Broadcasts and click New campaign.
  2. Enter a Campaign name, in your own words.
  3. Under Who this sends to, choose an Audience. Click Count matching contacts if you want a current count. This is a live estimate, not the final list.
  4. Under What it says, choose the WhatsApp account, then the Template. Only approved templates are listed, shown with their language.
  5. Under Fill in the blanks, choose a source for each blank (see below).
  6. Under What one recipient reads, pick a contact to preview their message.
  7. Under When, choose when to send. See Schedule and send.
  8. Under How fast, set Messages per minute (1 to 6,000; the default is 60).
  9. Click New campaign.

The campaign is saved as a Draft and its page opens. From there you resolve the audience, send a test and send it.

Fill in the blanks

Each blank in the template, shown as Blank {{1}}, Blank {{2}} and so on, is filled for each recipient. For each one, choose Where the value comes from:

  • A contact field: the recipient's Name, WhatsApp number, Language, Lifecycle stage, or one of your custom fields.
  • The same words for everyone: type a fixed value.

There is no default value, on purpose. If a recipient has nothing in the chosen field, they are left out of the campaign, with the blank named on their row, and everyone else still gets their message. This stops messages like "Hi , your order is ready" from going out.

Every blank needs a source before the campaign can be saved.

Note: Templates that use named placeholders (rather than numbered ones) can't be used in campaigns. You see This template uses named placeholders if you choose one.

For more on template blanks and buttons, see Template variables and buttons.

Coupon codes

If the template has a Copy code button, a Coupon code row appears. Choose one code for everyone (up to 15 characters), or each contact's own code from a contact field. The template's sample code is never sent in its place.

Preview a real message

Under What one recipient reads, search for a contact by name or number. The preview shows their actual message, filled from their record.

  • This contact can be filled in, so they would get this message.
  • This contact would be left out: they have no value for one of the fields you mapped. Fill in the field on their contact record, or choose a different source.

Templates with an image, video or document header

A template whose header is an image, video or document needs a default file before it can go to a list. Campaigns send that file in the header; you don't upload media per campaign.

If the template has no default file, you see This template needs a default image before it can go to a list when you resolve the audience. If you can edit templates (Owners, Admins and Marketing Managers), you can set the file right there, then click Resolve the audience again. Setting it does not send the template back for review.

Send a test

On the campaign's page, click Send a test.

  1. Under Send the test to, choose up to ten contacts, such as your own number or a colleague's.
  2. Click Send the test.

A test sends the real message, by the real route, to real people. It cannot be taken back. Test messages are counted apart from the campaign's results and never move its progress. If a test recipient is refused (opted out, unreachable or missing a value), that is the same check the campaign will make.

Edit a draft

Open the campaign from the list, make your changes and click Save changes. Only Draft and Ready to send campaigns can be edited. If you save a change to a campaign whose audience is already resolved, its recipient list is discarded and you need to resolve the audience again.

To remove a campaign you no longer need, click Delete (Owners and Admins). A campaign that has sent anything cannot be deleted.
